This is one of my favorite movies because it's just so well written and so well put together. it's going to be a long hot summer and we are going to need our break with reality. The Ninth Gate rejects that. The movie was crap. But Corso knows that the last print is a forgery. Read the book instead. isn’t that the exact same location used in Frantic and Ronin?

When Corso says, "this can be an expensive trip," what he really means is that Balkan will lose his life unless Balkan changes his course of action.Like the horns or the pitchfork, a goatee is an obvious character trait forthe devil. Indeed, that moment spoke volumes. But Corso knows that the last print is a forgery. That's a very difficult question. It is no coincidence that the only two people to see the devil for who he/she really is are Corso and us.Irony Gone Wild: The CriticsLet me finish with a bit of irony regarding film critics. That's all there is to it. I'd explain it but I fell asleep halfway thru it.

Am I even half-right? Although Corso does behave deplorably, doing almost anything for first money, then his own satisfaction, the audience will almost never classify him as "evil," despite his voluntary journey into hell.A vastly underrated film.

Then, suddenly, he is having sex with that girl outside, by the burning castle. After leaving the rare book shop Corso seems troubled - - - this is not due to the death of his friend. My understanding is that the sexy French chick who kept Corso outta trouble is actually a (lusty) servant of Satan, sent to guide Corso through the Ninth Gate.


He committed to it by killing his god. And what kind of pathetic Devil powers are those - occasionally levitate, and occasionally display some grade-Z martial arts? At the end, they consummate their love in the flesh. Why is Corso chosen? Although they like to talk about making more "realistic" movies these days, in many ways the bad guys at least have all become Snidely Whiplash.Everyone else, please feel free to share your thoughts on the movie (good or bad) after you've seen it. Wow, that's a great breakdown of the movie. Because of this, LCF lets him enter her kingdom to reign with her. For all I cared, Corso could have spent the whole movie trying to track the books supposedly written by an ancient vampire, or a manuscript supposedly written by aliens. However, Corso is the devil.Polanski looked at the many films made involving the devil, and decided to build on a character trait seldom used in describing satan - that being that the devil in appearance is not recognized by others. And it does seem to have almost a bit of a cult following. Amazing review.. u've nailed the movie down to every single aspect.. to hell with the critics and n all.. Just wanted to ask you about ANGEL HEART... is it too melodarmatic or worth the watch?? I have a hard time believing Polanski would stoop to the crude, reactionary use of homophobia to suggest a lesbian as an evil person. or worth the watch???

Bah. Thus, we are conditioned to see Corso as “the good guy” and we cheer him on, no matter how evil he becomes. Excellent review. Clearly Polanski has unwound much of what the book is trying to tell, remaking it into his own story.The ending seems to be the only way it can be as Polanski has set it up. Also, by warning Corso to get out before it's too late Tessler reveals a thoughtfulness that extends beyond selfish reasoning. No one comes to mind. He has no other allegiance. Does anyone else agree? At least they will, until the end. But can the audience see this?To test the audience, Polanski does more than just tell us the story of Dean Corso. Corso explains this mid-way through as 3 x 3 (=9 ----> or the nine gates - get it?). The Girl is a mysterious woman with supernatural powers who appears in The Ninth Gate.

. Thus, when Balkan sets himself on fire, much to his surprise, he burns. That was the very culmination of Corso following thru with the great path. I personally don't care one way or the other, as it's none of my business what other people do. I knew I liked the movie when I first saw it -- I usually like Johnny Depp films.

It's a great little Polanski Noir. I think the girl was a familiar or demon/guide to help him along the way.

The Ninth Gate itself was the same building that they were at before - the one from the final etching. Well, I love Johnny Depp and Frank Langella, so I gave it a shot. Corso watches Balkan burn with more than a hint of satisfaction on his face. But I expect that the lowest common denominator will always be catered to.
Sultry demonbabe Olin was there to shepherd him along. Captain, I think you're absolutely right to equate Hollywood evil with melodrama. Watch how LCF kisses him; her kisses say it all. cartoon evil. And he does it without any props, effects or plot manipulation -- it's all acting. The Ninth Gate puts book dealer Dean Corso on a hunt for proving the authenticity of a book supposedly co-authored by the devil himself. Only 8 were found to be signed bu LCF. I followed the movie and figured she was either a demon or a person who had also found the ninth gate.

Polanski’s point in this, is that evil stands before us all the time, but we don’t see it because we are looking for something too grandiose.With regard to Corso, the young woman renders her verdict when Corso kills the henchmen. The final illustration is enacted by him and the (unnamed) girl (a servant of the devil). Jerks.On an interesting aside, I read the book the movie came from -- The Club Dumas. 4) It is so campy. There is a suggestion that Kessler's secretary and possibly Kessler are lesbians. Sultry woman is clearly suposed to be the same woman that is drawn into the lower right corner of the final etching, pointing to the building, showing the way. As you know, film critics like to think of themselves as a nuanced and insightful group. The couple who've criticized apparently have serious personal issues and are trying to read their own prejudices into this film.Angel Heart is a strange film.

Corso kills the bad guy and escapes the burning castle. The woman is clearly an agent of the devil in both.

In the book Corso appears, and the villain (he is different, Polanski does some character shuffling) is preparing to perform the ritual to open the ninth gate.

Except... by the middle, there is a clear supernatural element, with "The Girl" flying/floating around.

Such conspicuous prejudice unfortunately tipped me off that this review and other blog posts appeared to be coming from someone with a strong political slant to the hard right. Sadly, I can't think of anything else that is even similar to The Ninth Gate -- which is probably more evidence of how well The Ninth Gate stands out.
