While this should be a great delve into humanity surviving after apocalyptic events with a focus on the children they may have to butcher, unfortunately it simply ends up as a subpar zombie book. People who are exposed have a short incubation period before the cordyceps fungus has completely ravaged their brain, but there are some children who are resistant to the fungus, and some who are enhanced by it. OMG too freaking funny. For those that are still with me, I will admit that when reading the book, Helen Justineau’s race didn’t seem like a critical point to me. The characters behave in familiar, archetypal patterns, leading to what seems to be a fairly basic “find the cure” plot… but that’s where the good stuff kicks in again with a twist.

The resistant and enhanced children are like no other infected people, so logically it is assumed that the answer to the cure is buried somewhere deep inside of them.

Melanie, like the other children she lives with, is a zombie; the planet has been overrun, and these intelligent kids are the only possible way for its remaining scientists to find a cure.

The race-swapping of these two characters has no significant impact on the story itself. Zombies and a military base – I’m sure you’re thinking: Haven’t we heard this story before? This story focuses on a small group of survivors in a military base in the countryside. Recently, there have been some innovative treatments: Seth Graham-Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies retconned them into Austen's world; 28 Days Later, The Walking Dead and World War Z concentrated on the human side of what happens when zombies take over the world; and Colson Whitehead's incredible novel Zone One showed the brutality of a world forced to react to such an outbreak. Like Christopher, Greaves is unnerved by physical contact, untrue statements, and uncertainty, and he approaches challenges with a mechanical, scientific interest. I'd assumed not, but The Girl With All the Gifts proves how wrong I was.

It’s all very well done, and I’m very impressed – this might just be my favorite alternate scientific premise for the zombie apocalypse. Too much of the story’s action consists of them making discoveries that characters already made in the previous book, or battling the same despair, anger, and fear that their predecessors battled. But despite that, there are still a couple notable differences between the novel and film versions of The Girl With All The Gifts. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh. The Girl With All The Gifts focuses on a group of scientists at a military base studying a group of hybrid hungry children — they still have a taste for blood, but they retain their full mental capabilities. It’s Melanie’s narrative that drives this book, that makes The Girl with all the Gifts so moving; filtering the narrative through Melanie’s (and select other characters’) perspective makes her journey of self-discovery that much more profound.
There is an early scene with Melanie being taken to the classroom in shackles and performing for Miss Justineau: writing a little story, having Miss Justineau reward her with no more than a loving touch.

The film version of The Girl With All The Gifts doesn't give much background to her story. Although these are generalisations seen through a child’s eye these characters all have strong motivations as to why they are acting the way they do and why they are withholding secrets from the children, as well as each other.

But this book’s story of selfishness, pettiness, anger, and poor choices is comparatively predictable. His inability to communicate sets up a lot of narrative tension, but it’s more exasperating than exciting. On the other hand you have Dr Caldwell, who will pick children at random and start carving up different parts of their body in an attempt to learn about the infection at a cellular level. While on the military base, her students were essentially cuffed to their desks, so they didn't hurt the humans. And Melanie does long for the things they have.

One of the final shots of The Girl With All The Gifts is a teary Helen awaking in her new prison, knowing this is all her life will ever be. When the UK publisher approached us about being a part of the release of this title, I was ecstatic. I was pleased to see Amazon release it for streaming, with Blu-Ray and DVD releases coming in April. Metaphor again, but shifted from the “growing up and gaining independence” metaphor of the book to more of a civil-rights metaphor: Melanie isn’t growing up so much as forcing the powers-that-be to recognize her value, that she has things to contribute if she is allowed to contribute them on her own terms, that taken out of the shackles and the mask, she is a person. The Girl With All The Gifts asks the question "How far would you go to save the world?" There are various other characters that Melanie interacts with whom she has very strong feelings about and who treat her in various different ways.
