The first 2/3 of the book is repetitive in her making poor decisions with terrible white men, then the last 1/3 of the book becomes more of a grander statement of being a black girl and reveals the root cause of why Queenie makes so many flawed decisions. This is the kind of novel whose excellence sneaks up on you.
