I’d argue that power can be destroyed, and often will be in dystopias. I always thought the crucial feature of a dystopian story was an explotative government that is utterly inaccessable to all but the ultra elite. Anti-capitalist dystopias include The Iron Heel (1907) by Jack London, The Air Trust (January-October 1915 The National Rip-Saw as "The Story of the Air Trust"; 1915) by George Allan England, and Useless Hands (1920; trans 1926) by Claude Farrère.
Examples from the 1940s of this formula are "If This Goes On –" (February-March 1940 Astounding; rev in Revolt in 2100 coll 1953) and Sixth Column (January-March 1941 Astounding as by Anson MacDonald; 1949 as Heinlein; vt The Day After Tomorrow 1951) by Robert A Heinlein, Gather, Darkness! J D Beresford's and Esmé Wynne-Tyson's The Riddle of the Tower (1944) suggests that the fundamental danger facing society is "Automatism" – the trend toward the victory of organic society over the individual – whatever political philosophy is invoked to justify it. Young adult (YA) dystopian literature is a trend that is taking the nation by storm. If society recovers quickly, challenges feel too easy for your protagonists.
However, evolution is specifically a change in behavior or physiology in reaction to external factors.
If you give characters too much control, the spotlight is on them all the time. The society of Star Trek is, on the whole, a utopian one. * Mother nature can act as another hurdle for survivors. Hope drives characters toward a goal, whereas despair promotes inaction. Writer – Editor – Writing Coach Many changes have good and bad aspects, as the best reaction to one problem could create a new one. Who a character trust tells us much about them and their values. Dystopia is a world in which everything is imperfect, and everything goes terribly wrong. Dystopian literature shows us a nightmarish image about what might happen to the world in the near future. They tie directly into other related themes, such as trust and control. Dystopias are usually chaotic places. A lot of apocalyptic stories feature dystopian societies, because we assume that the destruction of society will go along with negative consequences for most people, creating societies where everyone or at least a majority will lead a hard life.
Dystopian novels embrace environments that are destroyed and societies that are under control.
But characters shouldn’t always achieve those goals, or hope won’t mean much. The greedy materialism which has created Stahlstadt is also the underlying ideology of H C Marriott Watson's Erchomenon (1879). That being said, I wouldn’t consider many of the stories on this list as dystopian. Genre sf soon followed this lead – and so prominent was the dystopian image in magazine sf that the transition from fakery to "realism" was very easily achieved. Robert Hugh Benson's Lord of the World (1907) is a hysterical protest against secularism, humanism and socialism which ends with the apocalypse. All stories need some hardship in order to have conflict and tension. Should I Have Multiple Alien Species or Just One?
That’s certainly a type of dystopia, and the type present in the archetypical dystopian novel, 1984. Anti-socialist dystopias, which are more numerous, include The Unknown Tomorrow (1910) by William Le Queux, Crucible Island (1919) by Condé B Pallen, Unborn Tomorrow (1933) by John Kendall, Anthem (1938) by Ayn Rand and The Great Idea (1951; vt Time Will Run Back) by Henry Hazlitt. If the entire setting is rooted in despair, then hope would require a dramatic and positive shift in the world. The fewer people there are, the less power there is to go around (albeit distributed among fewer people). Which theme you choose and how you use it will determine the type of tale you’re telling. You can use trust or lack thereof to add conflict to a story. The most detailed analysis of this anxiety, and perhaps the most impressively ruthless of all dystopias, is My (trans as We 1924) by Yevgeny Zamiatin, and the most luridly horrible development of it is to be found in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), which in part expressed Orwell's despair of the UK working class and its capacity to revolt (or even be revolted). Outside the sf magazines the post-World War Two period produced a remarkable series of very varied dystopian novels – remarkable not only for their diversity and characteristic intensity but also for a tendency to black comedy. Besides simple violence, characters might compete on a social level for mates or allies. Yet people still must rely on one another to survive, which makes trust critical. And it can manifest differently in different societies.
