It’s a coming-of-age dark romance and drama which is melancholic and strangely peaceful at the same time. She provides a stark counterpoint to the teenage and young adult dramas and tragedies that precede and follow. It's a complicated situation for sure and I don't know how this would be viewed legally, but I do think we were supposed to view it as Reiko being molested. Our. I mean the way that Naoko’s body is described in the moonlight I get the impression it’s of a young, lithe, but maturing body. The fact is that, as you said, Murakami is Murakami and when it comes to sex and women, he's got his ideas about the matter and they're not particularly agreeable. First it’s Toru who is friends with the couple Naoko and Kizuki. I hated it when Toru and Reiko. Norwegian Wood: 'languorous, visually striking movie about love and loss'. I don’t think it’s wrong to read into these things, especially if that’s the gut feeling you get from a character and there’s at least some plausible evidence, I mean what’s the point if the novel is totally not trying to tell that type of story? I don't think she wants to abuse her daughter. I realize that I shouldn’t have done that but I had heard so much about him and his dark writing that it was difficult not to. How could Reiko do that. It is Reiko who sings, in English, a rather beautiful version of "Norwegian Wood" which is later sung by Lennon and McCartney over the final credits. Love your reviewing style ?
She had means, possible motive ( predatory record, possessive of Naoko, interested in sex with Toru) and opportunity to murder Naoko, her complete domination of Naoko's narrative also meant Toru was far from the only one readily willing to accept her suicide without suspicion. Reiko supposedly is all wrinkly. Murakami has written acclaimed novels such as Killing Commendatore, 1Q84, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, and Kafka on the Shore. CHARACTERS: 4.5/5 And while I agree Naokos suicide caught me off guard, it also was so incredibly obvious and preordained.
Meanwhile, Watanabe is given a dubious sentimental education at the hands of Nagasawa, a suave, promiscuous fellow student bound for the diplomatic corps, and a more beneficial one from the pretty, witty, intelligent Midori, who attempts to draw him out of his solipsistic shell. Naoko is distant and emotionally closed but Midori is available and in love with him. The climax is what I disliked the most about Norwegian Wood. Toru is in love with Naoko but Naoko is broken. If we instead look at this as a real world act it's actually incredibly macabre and unsettling, eerily reminiscent of her (accused) predatory history.... but of course Naoko "wanted" her to have the clothes. By Sankalpita on April 17, 2018 in Book Reviews, Drama Books, Fiction, PLOT: 4/5 I thought Naoko ultimately committing suicide was too obvious and on the nose; on the other hand it was very strange to me that Reiko dresses in Naoko’s clothes and sleeps with Toru at the end of the novel. The central tale concerns the reserved Watanabe's devotion to the mentally disturbed Naoko, the former girlfriend of Watanabe's only close friend, Kizuki, who committed suicide at the age of 17. Also when Toru finally has sex with Reiko at the end of the novel, Toru is explicit in describing the wrinkles all over her body (and kisses them with purpose), so I don’t think Reiko could have unknowingly switched with Naoko that first night. Like, people think lesbians are predatory anyway, that gay people are pedophiles, so the neighbors are ready to believe the demonizing story. She discourages Toru visiting Naoko in person. The original text plus a side-by-side modern translation of. I am looking forward to read the book now. I’m not one to boycott problematic authors, but there are so many other good books out there which aren’t going to hit me over the head with a blasé treatment of child sexual abuse. In the end, Reiko being a "bad guy" is an interesting theory, but I prefer the idea of Reiko as a good character, otherwise it gets too bleak and cold of a story for me without any hope at all. Caught between what they desire and what they think is ideal, they often end up making decisions that they themselves don’t understand. Can anyone tie it symbolically toward anything else in the story? Real therapy; not the feel good asylum she went to. While I’m interested in the Reiko murdered Naoko theory, I too think it obviously is not the case and undermines the theme of the entire book. Thank you, Harshita. Teachers and parents! Reading the book like this makes large parts of it extremely creepy, of course. Another possibility: Reiko isn't real; she represents Toru's attempt to deal with his own guilt. CLIMAX: 3.5/5 the idea that the pervading theme of the book could serve as a misdirection for the main character as well as the reader is a really interesting idea to me. The description that when she first saw her she just looked taller with her neck bent like she was thinking is true horror. Is Reiko what she seems? I still can‘t get the ending ?
